About
Varkala
Varkala is a seaside tourist resort and spa. According a myth,
sage Narada was approached by a group of mendicants who confessed
to having sinned. Narada threw his valkkalam (cloth made of
the bark of a tree) into the air, and the place where it landed
was subsequently named Varkala. The mendicants were directed
by Narada to offer their prayers in the newly created place by the
seashore. The place where the prayed for redemption, came to be
known as Papanasam (redemption of sins).
A
small town 50km north of Tvm and 175km south of Cochin. It
is an important religious place for Hindus. Papanasam Beach is
known for its white, silvery stretch of sand High cliffs with
mineral springs rise from the coastline.
Oasis
Odayam Beach is north of Papnasam Beach and just 10mts walk away.
It is long , clean and secluded palm-fringed beach. Here you
can see Kerala's traditional style of fishing. 1000yrs old mosque
is another major attraction here.
It
is still a peaceful fishing village with rock beds and sandy
beaches. The beach here offers ample scope for swimming. High
cliffs with mineral springs rise majestically from the coastline.
The unique cliff tops provide a sweeping view of sea scape below.
Sivagiri
Mutt is 2km away from Varkala Town. Here is the final resting
place of Sree Narayana Guru, the social reformer of Kerala.
The
2000yrs old Sree Janardhana Swamy Temple and Nature Care Center
are the two main attractions of Papanasam Beach. Golden Island is
10km away from Varkala. A Siva temple and the birds are major
attractions here. The temple festivals in varkala are celebrated
from December to April.
